Lori Leak loves cheese and it is so many dishes. But she also likes chocolate. That made yesterday’s Guess the Dish even more fun because it involved soufflés – which can be made with cheese or chocolate!

Surely, you want to know more about this very interesting food. Now, here are some fun facts about soufflés:

Souffle Fun Facts: A soufflé  is a lightly baked cake made with egg yolks and beaten egg whites combined with various other ingredients and served as a savory main dish or sweetened as a dessert.

  • The word soufflé is the past participle of the French verb souffler which means “to blow up” or more loosely “puff up”—an apt description of what happens to this combination of custard and egg whites.
  • The first recipe for soufflé appeared in Vincent La Chapelle’s Le Cuisinier Moderne in 1742.
  • The word soufflé first appeared in English in Louis Ude’s The French Cook, 1813, and by 1845 was so commonly accepted that in Eliza Acton’s Modern Cookery a recipe for soufflé was included as just another recipe.
  • February 28th is National Chocolate Soufflé Day.
  • May 18th is National Cheese Souffle Day.
  • The Guinness Book record soufflé in the Palestinian town of Nablus weighed 3,891 pounds, and was 243 feet long before it was consumed in ten minutes.
  • Another kind of dish entirely is soufflé potatoes, which are puffed-up sautéed potato slices, traditionally served with a chateaubriand steak.
